I’m takin’ what they givin’ ’cause I’m working for a livin’…

This week @ MCC we are wrapping up our Intersections series by talking about where God and work meet. We can often separate our careers and our spirituality, especially if you don’t work at a church. But what we will discover is that our careers, regardless of what they are, matter to God.

So, in honor of this week’s topic, here are some of the lyrics to Huey Lewis and the News‘ song, “Workin’ for a Livin'”:

Hey I’m not complaining ’cause I really need the work
Hitting up my buddy’s got me feeling like a jerk
Hundred dollar car note, two hundred rent.
I get a check on Friday, but it’s all ready spent.

Workin’ for a livin’ (workin’)
Workin’ for a livin’ (workin’)
Workin’ for a livin’, livin’ and workin’
I’m takin’ what they givin’ ’cause I’m working for a livin’.

So, do these words reflect how you feel about your job? Take a minute to share what you do and how you feel about it.

Workin’ for a livin’,

  1. I work at WKU in Potter Hall as an Account Specialist. I handle the money coming in from different departments and putting that into Banner into the departments accounts before it all goes to the bank. I actually love it here. I have a great group of bosses and a great group of people to work with. But I do understand how it can feel like you are just working to get the paycheck because that’s basically what we look for when the end of the pay period comes…the money! I don’t feel that way about this job, right now, but I have felt that way about previous jobs. It’s hard when you work somewhere you don’t really enjoy working at and just feel like you are there for a paycheck…it makes your time there miserable.
