Even Superman…

Everyone has a weakness. Some are obvious: you can tell that some people have a weakness for buying “stuff”, for example. Some are below the surface, hidden from view. Regardless of where it is visible, we all have weaknesses…even Superman has his kryptonite.

In most cases we try to cover up our weaknesses, to keep them off the radar. We are trained that to admit weakness is a sign of failure. But in the New Testament, Paul gives us a different perspective. Paul is writing about a “thorn in his flesh”, some sort of issue that he was asking God to remove. Here is God’s response to Paul, and Paul’s response to God.

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12v9-10 [TNIV]

What may appear to us as a weakness that needs to be compensated for, is actually an opening for God to show his power in our lives. How differently would we feel about ourselves if we saw our weaknesses through God’s eyes?

I am learning that the weakness I want to pretend doesn’t exist is really the place where God wants to work through me.

How has God been strong through your weaknesses?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
